What do you find different with digital illustration from drawing by hand?

Though similar sketching techniques are used, digital illustration allows a certain level of flexibility as oppose to drawing by hand. For start, you save plenty time by duplicating lines and shapes where possible; elements of your illustration can be separated onto different layers; and reproduction of the finish artwork is possible at different sizes with no loss of quality. But of all the advantages of digitally creating illustrations, the greatest perhaps would be the ease of editing; during the illustration process, modification can be more easily applied.

Yet, hand drawing has its own charm. There’s that freeness in exploring ideas when drawing by hand. It’s a good starting point when approaching a new artwork; a great technique when conceptualizing to get your ideas from mental thoughts to visual thoughts. Most charming, is the added sense of sincerity to your piece. Though digital illustration can achieve photo-realistic images, there is somehow perfection in an imperfect feel.

Even so, there is certainly the option of combining the two techniques to get the best of both worlds!
